Job: Program Development Director in San Francisco, CA
Carr Educational Foundation posted on 10/28/2009
Summary
Background:
The Carr Educational Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit California public benefit corporation whose mission is to create sustainable school models. It has established the Daraja Academy, a free non-religious academic boarding school for Kenyan girls of poverty, in 2009. The Daraja Academy occupies a previously built 150-acre school facility three hours north of Nairobi near Nanyuki, Kenya.

The vision of Daraja Academy is to provide its students with a practical education and alternatives for post-secondary school with an emphasis on remaining in Kenya to strengthen their communities and country. The mission of Daraja Academy is to cultivate a community of individuals with a sense of cultural awareness, social conscience, and environmental responsibility, while instilling talents that will enable them to open doors to a global society.

Daraja means bridge in Swahili. The school is a bridge between Kenyan and American students as the youth exchange ideas in cyber-classroom assignments. It is also a bridge to the community, where students and faculty become actively involved in the local region.

Daraja Academy collaborates with several partners, including: non-governmental organizations in Kenya for student selection, the Universities of Minnesota and San Diego in educational initiatives, and MS Kenya, a Danish volunteer organization, which supplies 30% of the school’s operating budget and works with the Daraja Academy students in tutoring, sports, and other activities.
