Summary
Lambda Legal seeks a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) who can lead the organization’s Finance Department and is responsible for managing Lambda Legal's financial/accounting and database functions.
Lambda Legal is a national organization committed to achieving full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people, and people with HIV, through impact litigation, education, and public policy work. Founded in 1973 and headquartered in New York City, Lambda has regional offices in Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta and Dallas.
Lambda Legal’s civil rights work encompasses a wide range of areas, including federal and state constitutional law issues; discrimination in employment, benefits, housing, insurance, schools and other areas; prevention of harassment and violence; LGBT youth issues; parental rights and adoption; and access to healthcare, education and HIV-related treatments. Lambda Legal uses not only litigation and policy advocacy, but also educational messages, publications and strategies to increase public knowledge about LGBT people and people with HIV, and advance civil rights through change in societal attitudes.

Responsibilities: The CFO is a member of Lambda Legal’s senior management team and the liaison to the Administrative & Finance and Audit Committees of the Board of Directors (BOD). The CFO will oversee the accounting and reporting of all income and expenses, direct the preparation and filing of reports to regulatory agencies and manage the annual audit of Lambda Legal's books. S/he will act as the liaison to Lambda Legal's investment managers, monitor the performance of the investment portfolio and supervise the management of cash flow. The CFO will also review gifts and grants received by Lambda Legal to insure proper accounting and reporting, and work with the BOD on the selection of the organization's investment management firm.

The ideal candidate will organize and direct the annual budget preparation process (currently $10+ million) and issue monthly reports of budget vs. actual results with updated projections. S/he will provide financial information to the BOD and management for relevant discussions and decisions.

The CFO will manage the organization’s relationship with our independent auditors, bankers, investment advisors and insurance brokers/providers.

The Chief Financial Officer will recruit, train and supervise Finance and Database staff and conduct annual performance appraisals of that staff.

The CFO reports to the Deputy Director of the organization and directly supervises the Senior Accountant, Staff Accountant and the Database Manager.
