Summary
THE HARLEM SCHOOL OF THE ARTS, INC.
The Harlem School of the Arts, Inc. (HSA) is a premier not-for-profit arts institution, located in the heart of historic Hamilton Heights in Harlem and with a rich cultural heritage dating back to the halcyon days of the Harlem Renaissance. Its board of directors, administration and faculty have reflected a multicultural dynamic since its inception, as manifested by such illustrious former Board members as Langston Hughes, Agnes DeMille, Ralph Ellison and Mary Rodgers Guettel, and a faculty that has included distinguished artists Max Roach, Arthur Mitchell, Yo Yo Ma, and Daniel Bernard Roumain, among others. Our faculty always has been and continues to be comprised of arts professionals who possess extensive performing and exhibition credentials, and expertise in motivating and encouraging students to challenge themselves and fully develop their talents.

HSA’s core mission is to enrich the lives of youth and their families in the Harlem community and beyond through training in, and exposure to, the arts. HSA's programs recognize both the intrinsic value of the arts in everyday life, and the ways in which arts education enhances academic achievement by developing self-confidence, discipline and learning skills in young adults.

In furtherance of this mission, the School serves over 3,000 students annually, of ethnically and socio-economically diverse backgrounds, in four core artistic disciplines: dance, music, theater and the visual arts. Since our founding in 1964 by soprano Dorothy Maynor, almost 80,000 children and young adults have benefited from the education and training in these disciplines that we offer year-round at our St. Nicholas Avenue main facility, the HSA Theater and, during the school year, in the New York City public schools.

HSA is committed to meeting the challenges of the 21st century by expanding its programs to ensure that HSA students have access to new methodologies in arts education and cutting-edge technology in today's information-driven global society. Through HSA's numerous partnerships and artists-in-residence programs, the School has also become a cultural destination in Harlem, presenting theatrical, musical and dance productions and visual arts exhibitions in its "G-Space Gallery.”
