The Harlem School of the Arts (HSA) is a nonprofit, community-based school of the arts that offers instruction in dance, music, theater and the visual arts to over 3,000 students annually. Founded in 1964, our mission is to enrich the lives of children through exposure to and education in the arts.
HSA is currently seeking a Camp Director for our ARTScape camp, an arts-based summer camp for children between the ages of 4 and 12. We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Camp Director with a background in the arts who also enjoys working with children. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Manage and organize the entire summer camp program, including all administrative tasks, arrangement of daily camp trips, end of camp presentations, and pre & post camp responsibilities and requirements.
The oversight and group supervision of over 200 campers, 40 counselors and 25 teaching artists and the Director of the Teen Arts summer program (separate program geared to ages 12 – 17).
Attention to campers’ safety, active participation in camp activities & projects, skill development, adherence to camp rules and policies, social adjustment, and the overall enjoyment of the camp’s activities & programs.
Manage children’s behavior and act as a role model by setting a good example for the camp administrative staff, counselors and campers.
Work with camp staff to handle various situations that may occur between and with campers.
Keep a record of the daily attendance of the campers.
Supervise and lead campers on field trips.
Must be aware of all campers’ whereabouts at all times.
Must be flexible and willing to pitch-in and contribute whenever necessary, including leading/teaching camp activities & projects and assisting other counselors with their assigned responsibilities.
Greet campers and parents at the start of the day and at dismissal.
Training, scheduling, and supervising camp assistants and volunteers.
Communicating verbal and written camp-related information to parents, students, staff, and the general public.
Maintain and review records and evaluations of all programs, operations, staff, and facilities.
Order or supervise the ordering of food, supplies, and equipment, and arrange for proper distribution.
Assign staff and campers to groups.
